Abortion & Miscarriage Care

At Dandelion Health, we believe that having an abortion, induced or spontaneous, is a normal part of reproductive life. We are proud to offer trauma-informed and LGBTQ+ affirming reproductive healthcare, including medication abortion and procedural abortion. Our building is ADA accessible, and we have a designated parking spot in front of the building. Our staff speak Spanish, and we provide a language interpretation line for any other languages. Frequently Asked Questions

How much will my abortion cost? . . .

Both medication and procedural abortion services cost $500. This includes an ultrasound to determine how far along the pregnancy is, as well as any follow-up care you may need. Funding assistance is available.

What if I cannot afford the cost of my abortion? . . .

There are resources to help cover the cost of your appointment. Please call any of the following funds for financial assistance. When you call, leave a confidential voicemail with your appointment details (clinic name, appointment date, cost) and a call-back number. They will return your call within 48 hours as able.

- Richmond Reproductive Freedom Project (RRFP) or 1-888-847-1593, press 2 if you prefer a language other than English
- Blue Ridge Abortion Fund or 434-963-0669
- New River Abortion Access Fund or 540-553-8152, ext 1 for English; 1-833-672-2310 ext 4 for Spanish

Do you accept insurance? . . .

We use a direct pay model instead of working with insurance, as most insurances in Virginia, including Medicaid, do not cover abortion. Please see above for funding resources. The fee for your appointment is due on the day of the service.

What are the pros and cons of medication vs. procedural abortion? . . .

Both are safe and effective. Some people prefer procedural abortion because it's faster, they can finish the procedure within the doctor’s office, it has a higher success rate, there is typically less bleeding afterward, and no follow up visit is required. Some people prefer medication abortion because they can experience the symptoms of abortion (cramping and bleeding) in the comfort of their own home, with support people or pets around. It may also require less time in a medical office. With a medication abortion, you will need follow up to verify the abortion is complete. Procedural abortion is the only recommended option if the pregnancy is beyond 11 weeks and 6 days. You can read more about medication vs. procedural abortion here.

Is abortion safe? . . .

Yes. Abortion is significantly safer than giving birth, and safer even than a routine colonoscopy. Complications from abortion are extremely rare (between 0.2-2% of cases), and we will talk through all potential complications with you before providing the medication or procedure. Our staff is highly experienced in providing abortion care and managing any potential complications.

Is abortion painful? . . .

Every person experiences abortion differently and we are here to support you throughout your experience. We use a trauma-informed approach to provide everyone with a safe and affirming environment. With both medication and procedural abortion, it is normal to experience cramping abdominal pain similar to a heavy period. The procedure itself lasts between 5-10 minutes. We have medications and non-medication modalities to help with the pain, although at this time, we do not offer sedation during the abortion procedure. You will be awake during the abortion and can safely drive yourself home.

To find a clinician who can provide you IV sedation, you may search one of these databases:
- Abortion Finder
- I Need an Abortion
- Abortion Care Network
- National Abortion Hotline

Do I need to prepare for my abortion? . . .

You can eat or drink normally leading up to your appointment. You will be able to drive yourself home. We recommend having pads on hand, as some bleeding afterward is normal and expected. We will provide you with medication to help with cramping pain after the abortion.

What is trauma-informed abortion care? . . .

We recognize that experiences of sexual and medical trauma are unfortunately very common. To actively prevent re-traumatization and promote bodily autonomy, we let you guide the pace of our visit, take breaks when you need them, and provide deep breathing exercises and grounding support to you during the abortion procedure.

Is your practice LGBTQ+ affirming? . . .

Yes! All of our staff are trained in LGBTQ+ affirming care, and very familiar with providing healthcare to queer and trans individuals. We will always respect your pronouns and your chosen name and will only ask questions that are relevant to your medical care.

Can I bring my partner/friend/support person with me? . . .

You are welcome to bring a support person with you. We will ask them to wait in the waiting area for portions of your visit, but they can be with you during the procedure if you would like.

Can I travel from outside of Virginia to get an abortion? . . .

Yes. We recognize that the abortion landscape is in flux, and you can find up-to-date information by state at abortionfinder.org. If you need legal assistance, you can call the Repro Legal Helpline at 844-868-2812.

Does your staff speak languages other than English? . . .

Yes, multiple staff members are fluent in Spanish, and we have a language interpretation line available for any other languages.

Can I get an abortion if I am under 18 years old? . . .

Yes. Virginia law requires that a parent or guardian is notified of your abortion and signs a consent form with a notary. We have a notary on staff. Please reach out if you need assistance with this process.

What if I'm not sure about my decision? . . .

We recognize that some people are very certain about their decision for an abortion, and some people are struggling with their decision. If you would like to talk through your options, we recommend reaching out to these informed and neutral support lines:

-All-Options Talkline or 1-888-493-0092
-Faith Aloud or 1-888-717-5010

Can you provide any mementos from my pregnancy? . . .

Yes. If you would like, you are welcome to take a photo of the ultrasound. If the pregnancy is 11 weeks or more, we may be able to stamp footprints for you.
